Story number #0516 (2010)
I wrote this novel in the month of January back in 2010, four years ago. I sent it to my agent who sat on it for ages and ages. and apparently did nothing with it (unless what he did do was to leak the idea to another of his clients who later published a novel with a similar setup; this is just pure speculation on my part).
Fed up with my agent’s inactivity I withdrew the novel and submitted it myself to Meteor House, a new publisher based in the USA who specialised in works devoted to that wonderful master of SF and fantasy, Philip Jose Farmer.
STRINGENT STRANGE was accepted by Meteor House and the promotional build up was interesting, involving a charity auction enabling bidders to appear as a character in the ‘gladiatorial chapter’ of the book, which I then rewrote and expanded to accommodate those bidders. A decent sum of cash was raised to support the charity Animal Aid.
STRINGENT STRANGE is a sort of ‘steampunk’ comedy involving a test pilot who is half man and half gorilla. Initially set in the 1930s the action moves forward in time to the year 2112 and at this point the story also becomes a tribute to the Canadian rock band RUSH. I am delighted with this book. I think it flows and is full of amusing and unusual ideas and episodes.
The 88 copies of the signed limited edition of Stringent Strange are all named after one of the 88 official constellations.
In praise of Hughes:
