The Just Not So Stories

The Just Not So Stories features no less than 30 of Rhys Hughes most absurdist-flavoured tales, including some of his personal favourites such as ‘The Leveller of Neptune‘, ‘How to Lose Friends and Alienate People‘, ‘Message to Rosita‘, ‘My Crow Nation‘, ‘The Blue Jewel Fruit‘ and ‘The Sun Trap‘.

“They said it just wasn’t so. But it was! Thirty stories exploring the bizarre and curiously absurd world of cult writer Rhys Hughes… Irony-Whimsy-Paradox… Aliens-Mad Scientists-Monsters… Living Bicycles… Trumpeters in Outer Space… Wordplay… Robots in Lingerie… That’s the least of it… Herein you will discover phenomena new not only to science but also to the imagination! Roll up! Roll up! But if you can’t roll, feel free to hop, prance, slither, gyrate, stride, tiptoe, slide or undulate in any style you choose!”

In praise of Hughes:

“Rhys Hughes seems almost the sum of our planet’s literature… As well as being drunk on language and wild imagery, he is also sober on the essentials of thought. He has something of Mervyn Peake’s glorious invention, something of John Cowper Powys’s contemplative, almost disdainful existentialism, a sensuality, a relish, an addiction to the delicious. He’s as tricky as his own characters… He toys with convention. He makes the metaphysical political, the personal incredible and the comic hints at subtle pain. Few living fictioneers approach this chef’s sardonic confections, certainly not in English.” — MICHAEL MOORCOCK

“Quirky and fantastic and sometimes quite twisted, Rhys Hughes is a treat for those in the mood for something utterly different.” — ELLEN DATLOW

“Rhys Hughes is an accomplished player with words, plots, effects, relationships, sensibilities; you name it, Hughes tries to stand it on its head. More often than seems attributable to mere chance, he succeeds.” — ED BRYANT, LOCUS

“Dazzling prose. Put your feet up and dip in. Life will never seem quite the same again.” — THE THIRD ALTERNATIVE

“I wore throughout the undisplaceable, unsequelchable rictus of a grin of both delight and amazement.” — MICHAEL BISHOP

“The wonderful Michael Bishop with a copy of my Just Not So Stories. This book is dedicated to him and one of the stories actually features him as a character (and he wrote his own dialogue)… Anyway my book has just reached him and this makes me glad…”

“Double Nebula Award winner, four times Locus Award winner, Shirley Jackson Award winner and multiple Hugo nominated author Michael Bishop with a copy of my Just Not So Stories book published by none other than Mr Terry Grimwood’s Exaggerated Press… Thought you might like to see this. It delighted me. If it doesn’t please you, then look away now!”

Rhys Hughes and The Just Not So Stories

How does one promote two books AT THE SAME TIME? The only answer is to duplicate yourself and promote them both equally… So here we go. I closed my eyes and strained and eventually popped into two individuals this morning! It wasn’t easy… THE JUST NOT SO STORIES on the left; THE YOUNG DICTATOR on the right. (And yes, she is mainly on the right, even if not always in the right)
