title for a forthcoming collection

I dithered so long about choosing a title for a forthcoming collection that the publisher finally chose a title himself, taken from one of the stories in the book. This is the first time this has happened and I am surprised at myself for having no desire to protest it…

In fact I am rather enjoying the relinquishing of control, at least temporarily. I guess even control freaks need the occasional break…

Eternal Horizon

The September issue of Lightspeed Magazine has just come out in its ebook edition. This issue contains my story ‘Eternal Horizon‘ which is about what happens when the horizon gives birth and the sun starts to set behind the baby horizon instead of the real one, threatening to boil the oceans away, a disaster that can only be prevented by some pirates and a sea goddess…

Just finished writing my 742nd story

Just finished writing my 742nd story. ‘The Melon Seller’ is about what happens when Atlas is no longer required to hold up the Earth and needs to find another job. This tale was inspired by the time I bought a watermelon that was so large I had to carry it home on my shoulders, like a titan propping up a planet…

a story about polyhedra

Today I am going to start writing a story about polyhedra and each page of the story will be a pattern of creases that can be folded into a tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron and icosahedron, and when they are folded in this manner the words will join up properly and make sense…

Too tired today to do any hiking

Too tired today to do any hiking. I will go for a long walk this evening instead. So I will be starting work on my 741st story this afternoon, which is probably going to be called something like ‘Gathering the Genial Genies’ and will be about a man who collects genies. It will only be a few pages long and will be written with the aid of regular coffee and some chocolate.

740th story

Just completed my 740th story. ‘Starfish Wish’ is the first fiction writing I have done for six weeks. So now to purchase supplies and set off on a very long walk…

The Mammoth Book of Best British Crime

The Mammoth Book of Best British Crime has just arrived, edited by Maxim Jakubowski, one of my favourite anthologists.Official publication date is June 5th. I don’t write many crime stories (my Sampietro Mischief and Zwicky Fingers tales are my main exceptions) but this bumper book contains my tale ‘The Baker Street Cimmerian’, which is about what happens when Conan the Barbarian and Sherlock Holmes accidentally swap places…

A few years ago

A few years ago I wrote a story about a star goat that falls down a very long telescope and ends up in Wales… I wrote it for an anthology themed around fauns, satyrs and other goat/man hybrids. It is therefore a satyrical story. This anthology has just been published. Here it is!
